Etiology of Amputation in Patients Presented At HHIRS Mansehra

Abstract

Background: Comprehensive physical rehabilitation services of HHIRS were established in 2006 to deal with the orthopedic trauma resulted from the 2005 earthquake. The services transformed and are the major rehabilitations services in Hazara division. Data on amputation is not been analyzed.  The etiology and demographics between developed and developing world and with the regional domain is variable.  

Objective: The aim of the current study was to explore the amputation distribution and causes of amputation in seen at Helping Hand Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (HHIRS).

Methodology: This study was a retrospective study conducted in prosthetics and orthotics department of Helping Hand Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences Mansehra. HHIRS record over the last 12 years (July 2006 to July 2018) was evaluated and Data on amputees was collecteddata reviewed thoroughly and incomplete record were excluded. The collected data was classified into 4 groups in relation to age.  Frequencies and descriptive statistics were applied on the collected data and analyzed by SPSS 21.

Results: A total of 564 cases met the inclusion criteria. Traumatic cases were the highest 74% (n=416) among all the amputations.  Road Traffic Accidents were the leading causes among traumatic amputations which accounted for 33% of amputations. While non-traumatic comprised of 26% (n=148).

Conclusion: Traumatic causes of amputation were reported more than non-traumatic causes in 12 years of data. Male are more vulnerable, and road traffic safety is questionable.
